Abstract

Rapid advances in technology involve increased exposures to radio-frequency/microwave radiation from mobile phones and other wireless transmitting devices. As cell phones are held close to the head during talking and often stored next to the reproductive organs, studies are mostly focused on the brain. In fact, more research is especially needed to investigate electromagnetic field (EMF)'s effects on the central nervous system (CNS). Several studies clearly demonstrate that EMF emitted by cell phones could affect a range of body systems and functions. Recent work has demonstrated that EMF inhibit the formation and differentiation of neural stem cells during embryonic development and also affect reproductive and neurological health of adults that have undergone prenatal exposure. The aim of this review is to discuss the developing CNS and explain potential impacts of EMF on this system.

Conclusion

In the light of results described here, the effects of species of EMFs on cell biology, apoptosis and neuronal loss are unclear. Given the wide use of mobile communications in everyday life, whether RF-EMF exposure affects brain development is a major concern. The fetus and children brain are more sensitive the electromagnetic exposure. The brain is very sensitive to external factors during this period. Referring to the studies, the cells were observed to be many adverse effects, depending on the severity and duration of the applied EMF. ELF-EMF neuro-degenerative disease was observed on some neuroprotective effects, it is stated that the 900 MHz EMF caused damage in neurons.

In this respect, made it in a variety of electromagnetic frequencies, various immunochemical, biochemical and stereological studies are needed. With advanced technology in everyday life to stay away from the EMF, is almost impossible. Therefore, particular care must be taken when using the power tool. An alternative way to reduce the negative effects of addition may benefit from antioxidant therapy.

Abstract

The effects on human health of devices emitting electromagnetic field (EMF) have become the subject of intense research among scientists due to the rapid increase in their use. Children and adolescents are particularly attracted to the use of devices emitting EMF, such as mobile phones. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate changes in the spinal cords of male rat pups exposed to the effect of 900 megahertz (MHz) EMF.

The study began with 24 Sprague Dawley male rats aged 3 weeks. Three groups containing equal numbers of rats were established - control group (CG), sham group (SG) and EMF group (EMFG). EMFG rats were placed inside an EMF cage every day between postnatal days (PD) 21 and 46 and exposed to the effect of 900MHz EMF for 1hour. SG rats were kept in the EMF cage for 1hour without being exposed to the effect of EMF. At the end of the study, the spinal cords in the upper thoracic region of all rats were removed. Tissues were collected for biochemistry, light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) examination.

Biochemistry results revealed significantly increased malondialdehyde and glutathione levels in EMFG compared to CG and SG, while SG and EMFG catalase and superoxide dismutase levels were significantly higher than those in CG. In EMFG, LM revealed atrophy in the spinal cord, vacuolization, myelin thickening and irregularities in the perikarya. TEM revealed marked loss of myelin sheath integrity and invagination into the axon and broad vacuoles in axoplasm.

The study results show that biochemical alterations and pathological changes may occur in the spinal cords of male rats following exposure to 900MHz EMF for 1hour a day on PD 21-46.

... On the basis of measurements throughout the study with the cage empty, positional mean EMF intensity was 10.6 V/m beneath the cage and 7.1 V/m inside it. The positional mean EMF intensity with rats inside the cage was 8.9 V/m beneath the cage and 7.3 V/m inside it (Table 1). The whole-body specific absorption rate (SAR) was calculated at 0.01 W/kg .... According to these measurements, rats were exposed to a mean electrical field intensity of 7.3 V/m inside the cage (0.21 W/m2). Although our continuous 900 MHz EMF exposure system does not completely represent the effects of mobile phones etc. on humans, this value is regarded as equivalent to the intensity of EMF that mobile phones in speak mode can create in their immediate surroundings (mean 1–10 V/m for variables, i.e., mobile phone model and distance from the base station). These values are the limit values set out for a single source in GSM-900 base station systems  ....

Although it is impossible to make direct deductions concerning humans on the basis of the results of animal studies, the results of studies using rodents can be compared with humans at the same stage of development, irrespective of whether they are fetal, prenatal or postnatal (Rodier, 1980, Jacobson, 1991 and Odaci et al., 2004). For example, the neonatal period of the CNS in rodents is comparable to the last trimester in humans (Dobbing, 1970, Dobbing and Sands, 1973, Rodier, 1980, Jacobson, 1991 and Odaci et al., 2008). The study results may therefore be interpreted as meaning that prolonged and continuous exposure to 900 MHz EMF in the gestational period can compromise development of the human fetus spinal cord. In conclusion, our results show that continuous exposure to 900 MHz EMF for 1 h a day in early and middle adolescence causes degenerative changes in the rat spinal cord, such as atrophy, vacuolization, thickening and compromise in the myelin sheath, losses in axon cytoplasm and significant changes in MDA, SOD and CAT levels in spinal cord tissue.

The FCC today proposed a fine of $60,000 against T-Mobile, which it says failed to adequately warn and prevent the public from stepping too close to cellular antennas. Specifically, T-Mobile didn't properly block off nor place signs near three antennas (2 AWS, 1 PCS) on a building in Phoenix, Ariz. The FCC ascertained that anyone could easily access the area directly in front of the antennas, and discovered evidence (cigarette butts, pens, graffiti on the antennas) suggesting people had done exactly that. The FCC measured the signal strength in front of the antennas and found it exceeded between 175% and 300% of the FCC's maximum recommended exposure to radio frequencies. Wireless network operators are required by law to prevent people from standing in front of cellular antennas, as well as fully warn people about RF exposure in the area. T-Mobile did neither of this in this case. "T-Mobile bears the responsibility to restrict access to the noncompliant areas that exceed the public RF exposure limits, with barriers, markings, and appropriate signage, or to modify the facility and operation so as to bring its stations' operations within the RF exposure limits prior to public or worker access to the impacted area. Because T-Mobile failed to do so, we find that T-Mobile ... exceeded the general population/uncontrolled RF limits." T-Mobile has 30 days to make the $60,000 payment.

Simply using certain encryption services or investigating alternatives to Microsoft Windows could get you placed under surveillance by the National Security Agency (NSA) and other intelligence organizations, according to a new report.
Utilizing encryption solutions such as TOR could result in monitoring by the NSA and its allies, including Britain’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), according to the report in the German me­dia out­let Ta­gesschau.
The NSA tracks people with a surveillance tool called XKeyscore.
“Anyone who is determined to be using Tor is also targeted for long-term surveillance and retention,” Corey Doctorow wrote at the BoingBoing.net blog.
The German outlet said computer experts watched the XKeyscore code and found that the NSA was constantly monitoring TOR users on servers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, the National Journal reported.
TOR is a program that lets a person stay private by routing communications through computers and servers all over the world. It makes it much harder for the NSA and other agencies to track.
Other Behaviors the NSA Regards as Dangerous
The German report listed a number of seemingly innocent and harmless behaviors that can trigger NSA surveillance, the National Journal said. They include:
  • Going to Linux Journal, a popular forum for the open-sourced operating system Linux. The NSA apparently regards Linux Journal as an extremist forum.
  • Searching for information about Tails, a popular operating system used by human rights advocates.
  • Searching for information about any Windows alternative.
  • Searching for information about online privacy.
“The better able you are at protecting your privacy online, the more suspicious you become,” National Journal’s Paul Tucker wrote.
NSA buildingDoctorow, writing atBoingBoing.net, said the NSA surveillance goes beyond the explainable.
“Tor and Tails have been part of the mainstream discussion of online security, surveillance and privacy for years,” Doctorow wrote. “It’s nothing short of bizarre to place people under suspicion for searching for these terms.”
The NSA, he added, isn’t being honest about its surveillance.
“It’s a dead certainty that people who heard the NSA’s reassurances about ‘targeting’ its surveillance on people who were doing something suspicious didn’t understand that the NSA meant people who’d looked up technical details about systems that are routinely discussed on the front page of every newspaper in the world,” Doctorow wrote.
One expert Doctorow spoke with “suggested that the NSA’s intention here was to separate the sheep from the goats” – that is, to separate people who don’t care about their privacy from people “who have the technical know-how to be private.”
XKeyscore apparently tracks individuals online by using fingerprint triggers that activate whenever certain information is detected.

Juniper, a major manufacturer of networking equipment, said on Thursday it found spying code planted in certain models of its firewalls, an alarming discovery that echoes of state-sponsored tampering.
The affected products are those running ScreenOS, one of Juniper’s operating systems that runs on a range of appliances that act as firewalls and enable VPNs. ScreenOS versions 6.2.0r15 through 6.2.0r18 and 6.3.0r12 through 6.3.0r20 are vulnerable, according to an advisory.
The unauthorized code was found during a recent internal review, wrote Bob Worrall, Juniper’s chief information officer. He did not indicate where Juniper thinks the code originated.
Juniper has released critical patches to fix the problems.
“At this time, we have not received any reports of these vulnerabilities being exploited; however, we strongly recommend that customers update their systems and apply the patched releases with the highest priority,” Worrell wrote.
The internal review uncovered two problems. One could allow remote administrative access to a ScreenOS device over telnet or SSH.
Although log files would reflect a login attempt, “a skilled attacker would likely remove these entries from the log file, thus effectively eliminating any reliable signature that the device had been compromised,” Juniper wrote.
The second vulnerability can allow an attacker who can monitor VPN traffic to decrypt it. VPNs are encrypted connections between a user and another computer and are often used by companies to allow secure remote access to their systems for employees who are traveling.
Disturbingly, Juniper wrote that “there is no way to detect that this vulnerability was exploited.”
The earliest affected version of ScreenOS, 6.2.0r15, appears to have been released in September 2012, according to documentation.
That suggests attackers may have had access to corporate firewalls and VPN connections for a long time if Juniper was compromised at that time. Firewalls are rich targets for cyberattackers since the devices monitor all data traffic flowing in and out of an organization.
The compromise of such a prominent vendor with code specifically designed for spying echoes operations by the NSA described in documents leaked in 2013 by former contractor Edward Snowden.
December 2013 story in the German publication Der Spiegel described a 50-page catalog of hardware and software tools used by the NSA to infiltrate the equipment, including one targeted at Juniper’s NetScreen appliances.
The document describes a technique nicknamed FEEDTROUGH, which is used to keep two kinds of software implants on a Juniper NetScreen firewall.  The technique is aimed at keeping the software implants on the device even if it reboots or is upgraded.
The NSA also targeted other major networking manufacturers, including Cisco and Huawei, Der Spiegel reported.

Looking like a paranoid conspiracy theorist has never been so chic.
Tinfoil hats have traditionally been the preferred armor for protecting noggins from electromagnetic waves and radiation, but also can be a bit of a fashion faux pas.
Shield Apparel created a Kickstarter campaign to help people protect their brain waves from Big Brother and look cool while doing it with their “Signal Proof Headwear.”
The pitch is in such high demand that the early bird offer for one “signal proof hat” for about $24 is already sold out.
The London-based headwear comes as either beanies or baseball caps, and promise to block out signals from phones, WiFi, microwaves, TV signals and satellites.
The company claims to use pure silver as a fabric to block out what they call “electromagnetic smog,” which is placed between the hat’s layers.
The apparel was inspired by a family member who complained that he could not fall asleep and blamed it on wireless signals, according to the Kickstarter.

“We are not saying that it protects 100% against all kinds of electromagnetic waves that are bad for your health,” the group said. “What we are saying is that if you care about yourself, be smart and put on this first signal proof apparel instead of the usual one — no one will spot it and it will protect you.”
The signal helmets are certainly more inconspicuous than their tinfoil counterparts, and come in all sizes, from newborn infants to adults.
The company described their signal-blocking hats as one of "the most comfortable and functional headwear you have ever worn," and claimed it was invisible to radar and infra-red, in case any government agencies were tracking you.
“Shield offers the right headwear suitable for every situation,” they advertised. “You do not have to be paranoid or into conspiracy theories.”
The start-up claims the hat is better than the tin foil hat, using “actual situation and studies” to develop the headwear, and is also “more beautiful and comfortable” than tin foil.
On Sunday morning, the campaign raised $15,327 with 197 backers, and has ten more days to reach its goal at $19,268.

LONGWOOD, Fla. —Many people might have driven past it without knowing what it really was, and that's the goal.

Cellphone towers are popping up more and more, but not everyone wants one in their backyard. So now, carriers are getting creative -- call it divine service.
Behind the trees, standing roughly 180 feet tall and visible from Interstate 4, there is a white cross that is actually a cellphone tower in disguise.
"People don't want to see the ugly cell phone towers," said Chad Tucker, a contractor with BTO Wireless.
Tucker is a contractor working on the tower. He said he's done at least a half dozen others just like it. Critics argue the public should be told what is really being built.
"I believe it should be public knowledge, but a lot of people don't want to know," Tucker said.
The towers are not new, however. Just a few miles from the Neighborhood Alliance Church on Markham Woods Road is the First Baptist Church in Longwood.
Last month, WESH 2 News covered the controversy surrounding plans to build a 130-foot tower there.
"People love their cellphones and they love great cell coverage, but they don't want to live near a cell tower," said local resident Laura Evelev.

Other churches, like Maitland Presbyterian Church, turned their cellphone towers into bell towers.
Neighbors who live across from from the latest cellphone tower said they were surveyed about it six months ago.
"When I thought it was going to be a tree, I wasn't happy about it. But a cross, I think that's fine right there at the church, that's cool," said neighbor Randi Yasika.
"I think it looks good. I think it will help a lot of people with the connection around here," said neighbor Kevin Seedarnee.
The pastor said he signed a 30 to 40-year contract, approved by the county, that could fetch the church anywhere from $1,500 to more than $5,000 per month. He said he plans to use that money on mission work and toward charity.
The pastor also said the original cellphone tower had to be taken down to make way for the I-4 Ultimate expansion. A temporary one is being used until construction wraps up next month.

Objective To study association between nocturnal mobile phone use and mental health, suicidal feelings, and self-injury in adolescents. Methods Associations of mobile phone use after lights out with mental health, suicidal feelings, and self-injury were cross-sectionally examined in 17,920 adolescents using a self-report questionnaire. A series of logistic regression analyses were separately conducted for early (grades 7–9) and late (grades 10–12) adolescents. Results Sleep length was significantly associated with the mobile phone use only in early adolescents. Logistic regression showed significant associations of the nocturnal mobile phone use with poor mental health, suicidal feelings, and self-injury after controlling for sleep length and other confounders. Conclusions Mobile phone use after lights out may be associated with poor mental health, suicidal feelings, and self-injury in both early and late adolescents. Association between reduced sleep and the mobile phone use was confined to early adolescents.
