Be Wary of Cell Phone Radiation

Be Wary of Cell Phone Radiation

There are still more questions than answers about the safety of cell phones for kids, so use the precautionary principle.

Cellphones can cause increased headaches related to longer call durations, as well as hotness and tingling around the ear. Other studies have found nerve cell damage and albumen leakage in mammalian brains from cell phones' microwave frequencies.

Cell phone safety has been researched and debated for decades, with ties to cancer still hotly debated. Other studies have found nerve cell damage and albumen leakage in mammalian brains from cell phones' microwave frequencies.

Wireless communication devices such as cellular phones, transmission towers, cordless/DECT phones and wireless computer networks all produce high frequency RF waves. These waves can penetrate buildings and walls, contributing to our ongoing daily exposure to electromagnetic RF energy.

The high frequency radio RF produced by cellular, broadcast and other communication towers can travel long distances and the closer you are to the transmission source the more RF energy you will likely absorb. Conductive objects, including a home or building’s electrical wiring system, can act like an antenna picking up and re-radiated some of this RF energy for several feet. These invisible frequencies add to a person's daily, ongoing exposure to RF radiation.

As much remains unknown, use the Precautionary Principle when deciding upon cell phone and electronics use with your children. Kids' developing bodies, and especially developing brains, are particularly vulnerable to environmental insults. As with any healthcare issue, consult your doctor with any questions you may have, and become your own health advocate by bringing him or her information you find so that you can discuss it and make informed decisions for you and your family.

If computer equipment is on your back-to-school shopping list, see the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool. This site rates electronics according to environmental criteria. Choosing a product without lead, mercury, cadmium or certain flame retardants is better for human health in reducing immediate and long-term exposures to these potent toxins.
