Newly Formed Wireless Radiation Protection Coalition Calls for National Day of Action Against
"Smart" Meters

October 4, 2012

The Wireless Radiation Protection Coalition- a newly formed national coalition seeking protection from and elimination of electromagnetic radiation hazards and cybersecurity threats- is calling for a National Day of Action October 4th Against "Smart" Meters being deployed by utility companies.   A wave of demonstrations around the country will be held in the middle of "GridWeek" "smart" grid conference in Washington, DC - October 2-4, 2012.

The Coalition- comprised of wireless radiation safety experts, advocates individuals, and organizations, will be a voice at the U.S. national level for the public's health, safety, privacy, freedom from surveillance, and for the natural environment from the many adverse effects of wireless radiation products and infrastructures.

The Coalition will collaborate to plan programs and events that address the adverse effects of radiofrequency/microwave radiation from a variety of sources such as Wi-Fi, cordless and cell phones, 'smart' meters and their grid, laptops, tablets, ereaders, baby monitors, and infrastructure antennas. We welcome other organizations and individuals to join us (see below).

The GridWeek conference in Washington DC is the 'must-attend gathering' for the smart grid industry and will include global electric-industry representatives, government officials and vendors at the Walter E Washington Convention Center. The industry has a problem though. Public opposition to the smart grid is growing after widespread reports of privacy violations, house fires, and health effects followed "smart" meter installations in California and elsewhere. Now the public and elected officials want answers!

We call on anyone outraged by the various problems with "smart" meters to join us in front of the Convention Center and send the powerful message: "Stop Smart Meters NOW!"

We understand many of you won't be able to travel to Washington, DC.   Instead, we encourage you to participate by planning a 'smart' meter opposition event on October 4 in your area and location of choice. Please contact us for assistance. The more groups that participate, the more effective we'll be.

At this point, the following organizations will demonstrate:

Center for Safer Wireless (protesting in Washington, DC)

Maryland Smart Meter Awareness (protesting in Washington, DC)

Naperville Smart Meter Awareness (protesting in           Naperville, IL)

Stop Smart Meters!  (protesting in Santa Cruz, California)

Maine Smart Meter Safety Coalition (protesting in Maine)

Santa Fe Alliance for Public Health and Safety                     (protesting in Santa Fe, NM)

Florida Coalition for Health Against Smart Meters              (protesting in Florida)

We want loads of groups to join in so we can show how strong our movement is across America!

To join the coalition and/or to host an event in your area, please send an email to Evelyn Savarin at evsavarin@yahoo.com. We'll send a sample press release for you to distribute to your local media, or you can draft your own.

For those who come to Washington, DC, we highly encourage you to schedule a meeting in advance with staff of your congressional representatives to discuss, among other things, the Cellphone Right to Know Bill. In order to make your trip as productive as possible, let us know what else you would like to do to highlight our shared cause. Advocates of like mind in the DC area will open their homes; so if you want to take advantage of this, let the Coalition know soon. Low-EMR spaces are limited. Send an email toinfo@centerforsaferwireless.org if you plan to travel to Washington, DC.

We'll combine our talents to let everyone know that the 'smart' grid is a dumb idea. Let's work together in our field to raise awareness, make a bigger impact, and get some great press.

British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal Approves Smart Meter Class Action

On August 28, 2012, the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal in Canada issued a decision approving a representative complaint (akin to a class action) against BC Hydro on behalf of "those persons allegedly diagnosed with electromagnetic hypersensitivity and who have been advised to avoid exposure to wireless technology."

A copy of the Tribunal's decision is available at:

The Tribunal approved the representation of that class by the Citizens for Safe Technology Society, which it found to have authority to bring the representative complaint.  The Society may be contacted at www.citizensforsafetechnology.org by any person wishing to join the complaint.

"We, the undersigned, find that current national government as well as international authority limits do not protect the general public from adverse health effects from electromagnetic fields (EMF) emanating from devices such as power lines, cell phones and all wireless Internet devices and their associated antenna sites. Most of the existing limits on this form of radiation are at a minimum 1 to 10 thousand times too lenient to prudently protect humans from adverse health effects ranging from Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases, reproduction problems, sleep quality reduction, learning and memory interference, slowed ability of the body to repair damage, immune function decrease, cancer and electrohypersensitivity. Based upon the scientific evidence set forth in The Seletun Statement and the BioInitiative Report."
