MICHIGAN (WOOD) - Nearly 400 customers are speaking up about smart meters, including some who said they want to be able to opt out of the metering system.

The "Smart Meter Report" was released Friday by the Michigan Public Service Commission and outlined several concerns by the public including the cost, benefits, safety of the radio transmitter, and customer privacy.

But the majority of those commenting expressed concerns regarding the actual installation of smart meter technology.

The new smart meters automatically report usage six times a day to Consumer's Energy and can allow the company to control power to customers.

According to the report, traditional electromechanical meters are obsolete and are no longer being produced.

The MPSC says any risks are insignificant. If a consumer wants to opt out, the commission recommends charging a fee, and a reduced rate for those who use the smart meter.

Consumer's Energy estimates it will cost around $750 million for meter installation, along with other system upgrades and expenses.

A graph in the commission's report shows 84 percent of the customers who commented expressed concerns about being able to opt out or deny installation. That same graph shows 77 percent expressed concerns regarding health issues and privacy.
